Professors at the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University have issued a self-styled statement of support for students who have occupied the main building of Bulgaria's oldest institution of higher learning.

The permanent occupation, which was announced Friday evening, called for immediate resignation of embattled Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski and dissolution of parliament.

It is a continuation of summer street protests against the interweaving of murky business groups and politics, which was provoked by the appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski for head of Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security.

The protest at Sofia University flared weeks after Bulgaria's Constitutional Court issued a decision that it had no reason to strip Peevski - who swiftly resigned from the position of National Security chief in June - of his MP seat.

The Tuesday declaration, signed by 12 faculty members of the Theology Faculty, expresses solidarity with the student and civil outrage at the state of Bulgarian politics.

"Let us stand face to face those who today personify evil - the Council of Ministers, the Parliament, the Constitutional Court and all state institutions responsible for the chaos and collapse of statehood," declare the professors.

"As members of the Holy Orthodox Church, we call upon all Christians to express their Christian activity and to defend in practice their moral principles and values," add the undersigned.

Bulgaria's legislation and Sofia University internal rules prohibit all political and religious activity within the university.
