Hundreds of people supporting protesting Bulgarian students have surrounded the main building of Sofia University, in anticipation of the emergency meeting of the Academic Council.

At the meeting, the management of the University will discuss the student occupation and is expected to take a decision on how to handle the blockade and the cancellation of classes that it has triggered.

Those, who came to support the students' antigovernment protest, are booing the representatives of the youth branch of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and chanting "You Are Laughable!"

Students, who are guarding the entrance to the building's yard, have asked some of their supporters to move at least 2 feet away, so that the Academic Council members can come to the building. About 20 minutes before the start of the sitting at 2 pm, the first professors and lecturers have already arrived.

Earlier, the students' supporters blocked journalists from the crew of Alpha TV of the extreme nationalist party Ataka and from TV7 of controversial journalist-turned politician Nikolay Barekov, and did not allow them to enter the courtyard.

Meanwhile, tensions in the area around the University are growing. A young man went on the steps to read a declaration against the occupation for hurdling the studies of 20 000 young Bulgarians, but was met with shouts "Go Away!"

Some of the students and other citizens quickly formed a cordon and prevented a physical fight.

It was also reported that students from the "Paysiy Hilendarski" University in the second largest city of Plovdiv, from the Musical Academy, from the Visual Arts Academy, and from the University of Local and World Economy, all in Sofia, are getting ready to launch blockades.
