Bulgaria: Supporters of Land Sale Ban Stage Protest in Sofia Photo by BGNES

Disgruntled citizens supporting the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land to foreigners are gathering in front of the Agriculture Ministry headquarters in Sofia.

Two women participating in the protest are wearing traditional Bulgarian national costumes and waving Bulgarian flags, according to reports of the Focus news agency.

The demonstrators have brought posters saying "1 square meter per 0.5 liters of water, or BGN 0.50 – the promotion will be valid until the quantities are exhausted" and "Land, drenched in blood, is not for sale."

There are police patrols in the region but traffic along the Hristo Botev Blvd has not been blocked.

Bulgaria's Parliament approved an extension of the moratorium on sales of land to foreigners by 2020 last week.

However, the ban is expected to be lifted in early 2014 due to Bulgaria's commitments to the EU.
