Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov believes the country’s government has failed to cope with the ongoing refugee influx.

“The Bulgarian government cannot cope adequately with the refugee problem and this once again shows the lack of experience on behalf of Prime Minister Oresharski,” Borisov wrote on Facebook.

The former PM stated that the EU should spend as much as possible in order to keep Syrian refugees near to their home country.

After meeting with EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, Borisov also said that Bulgarian authorities should put more efforts into improving the conditions in refugee shelters.

Bulgaria has seen a considerable refugee influx over the past months, with authorities saying the number of asylum seekers in the country may reach 11 000 by the end of the year.

The Balkan country is the gateway to the European Union for refugees fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally to seek asylum.
