The Nobel Prize in chemistry has gone to three scientists who "took the chemical experiment into cyberspace".
Michael Levitt, a British and US citizen of Stanford University, US-Austrian Martin Karplus of Strasbourg University, and US-Israeli Arieh Warshel of the University of Southern California share the prize.
In the 1970s, the three scientists laid the foundation for the powerful programs that are used to understand and predict chemical processes. Computer models mirroring real life have become crucial for most advances made in chemistry today.
The computer simulations combine classical physics, which is able to track a multitude of atoms, and quantum mechanics, which is needed to capture the breaking and forming of chemical bonds.
