Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has threatened to slap a veto on planned amendments that would ease the full smoking ban in enclosed public spaces.

A Bulgarian Socialist Party MP said last week that the full smoking ban in enclosed public places must be dropped before winter.

The ultranationalist Ataka, a key ally of the Socialist-led government, has backed the plan. However, it has been met with strong criticism from the major opposition outfits, including the center-right GERB and the right-wing Reformist Bloc.

“The nation’s health is the most important thing to me,” Plevneliev declared on Tuesday, as cited by BGNES.

“The (non-smoking) regime has been introduced in a number of European countries – it is clearly right in the long term and I hope we would not back down from this stance,” he said.
