When all labor market restrictions for Bulgarians and Romanians are lifted next year many will head for Germany, providing fresh workforce to boost the country’s economy, according to the EU employment commissioner.
Speaking in an interview for the German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel, the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion L?szl? Andor argued that the expected wave of Bulgarian and Romanian migrants will secure necessary manpower as developing Germany needs greater workforce.
“I don’t see any threat.….when the German economy is growing there are many free workplaces. Mostly young people are entering the country. I see the process as beneficial for both sides,” the EU Labor commissioner stated, regarding the expected influx of migrants from Bulgaria and Romania.
Andor voiced disagreement with the statement that the new entrants to Germany must be driven away as they would come to receive social aid only.
The migrants to Germany from Bulgaria and Romania for last year were 7 000 and 21 000, respectively.
From January 1 2014 Romanian and Bulgarian migrants will have free access to Germany’s labor market following the lifting of travel restrictions put in place when their countries joined the EU in 2007.
