Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski has said he is not in favor of closing the country’s border with Turkey over the growing refugee influx from Syria.

“Of course, we have discussed this option, but, as I have declared several times, closing the border would not solve the problem, since the problem is humanitarian, above all,” Oresharski has told reporters.

He pointed out that the Bulgarian borders are well guarded, with all asylum-seekers detained by border police before they reach the country’s asylum centers.

Oresharski said the main risks for Bulgaria’s national security derive from the potentially vast number of Syrian refugees that may enter the country, as well as the possibility of “radicalized elements” being among them.

The Bulgarian PM reiterated that his country would seek European Commission help in order to deal with the refugee influx.

It was announced recently that Bulgaria has capacity to accept only an additional 1 000 refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict, while 4 000 are already in Bulgarian shelters.

Local ultranationalist parties Ataka and VMRO insist on closing the border with Turkey.
