The intention of Bulgaria’s formerly ruling center-right GERB party to hold a no-confidence vote against the current Socialist -led cabinet is unnecessary and unfounded, according to Parliament Speaker Mihail Mikov.

Mikov, MP from the Socialist BSP party, proposed the intended by GERB vote of non-confidence to be postponed until the specific motives for it become clear.

“Let us see their motives. We will then comment. I don’t reckon that they (GERB) have any grounds,” the Parliament Speaker said.

The formerly ruling party, which was forced to resign in February in the wake of mass protests, first made clear its plans to seek no-confidence vote against the government in July.

The move was meant as a gesture of support for the ongoing mass protests in the country.
The current series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) on June 14.

Although the appointment was revoked, Bulgarians went on to demand that the cabinet of PM Plamen Oresharski resign collectively.
