Bulgaria’s Constitutional Court is to rule on whether notorious media mogul Delyan Peevski would be able to return as an MP or not next week.
According to the Constitutional Court’s agenda for September, the decision on whether Peevski, a lawmaker of the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), would be able to return as an MP following his controversial appointment as head of the State Agency of National Security, is scheduled for September 23.
Several other key cancelled appointments will be on the agenda of the Constitutional Court in September.
The case of Ivan Ivanov, a Bulgarian Socialist Party MP appointed as Deputy Minister of Interior Affairs - and dismissed 2 hours later on the grounds of suspected links with former organized crime group SIC - would be also heard on September 23.
The case of Plamen Tsekov, who was removed from the post of a Health Insurance Fund director and the May 12 elections, would be discussed in the Court next week.
Another item on the Constitutional Court agenda regards the Radio and Television Act that would ban former Communist State Security operatives from being appointed on chief positions in national broadcasters. The decision will be pronounced on September 26.
The appointment of media tycoon Delyan Peevski for head of State Security Agency on June 14 triggered mass protests in Bulgaria, ongoing for more than three months now. Many Bulgarians saw the attempt to install Peevski to a post with access to classified information and the power to order arrests and wiretaps as an example of powerful private interests controlling state institutions.
Peevski’s appointment was canceled by Parliament on June 19, but the move failed to appease protesters, who have demanded the government’s resignation for over 90 consecutive days now.
