Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has issued Monday a strong warning the country was facing long-term instability.

"Even 23 years after the fall of the Communist regime we still cannot be proud with our democracy," says the President.

Plevneliev, cited by Focus News Agency, notes the judicial system is not functioning well enough; parties are staging wars against one another; there is no national consensus about economic and political priorities, all of which pose real threat for long-lasting instability.

"Citizens, not politicians, are now the moving force behind democratic renewal. This is something positive as we see an emerging real civil society. However, a small group of oligarchs is still very strong. People whose state of mind is still within the frame of the Communist system are being appointed at key posts," he stresses.
