Dr Benjamin Carson, the world-famous neurosurgeon and pediatric, delivered a public lecture “Admissible Risk Taken in Neurosurgery” at the Medical University in the Bulgarian town of Plovdiv on Thursday.

Ben Carson, known best as the first doctor having successfully separated conjoined twins, explained his approach to determining which risks are worth taking by surgeons at the Fifth Lecture-Hall of Plovdiv’s Medical university.

Benjamin Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 18, 1951 and was raised by his single mother . In his early years he was a poor student with bad temper and academic performance. Later on, he attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in psychology.

Carson was a Professor of Neurosurgery, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Pediatrics and the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.

In 1987, Carson made medical history by being the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins (the Binder twins) who had been joined at the back of the head (craniopagus twins). The 70-member surgical team, led by Carson, worked for 22 hours. At the end, the twins were successfully separated and can now survive independently.

In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

After delivering a widely publicized speech at the February 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, he became a popular figure in conservative media for his views on social issues and the government's role in the health care industry.

Carson has written four bestselling books: Gifted Hands,The Big Picture, Take the Risk, and Think Big.
