About 5000 Bulgarians yet again took to the streets of Sofia on Wednesday evening to demand the resignation of the country's socialist-led coalition government.

The rally was held for the 83rd day in a row in the record-long protest for the country.

The protest was attended by former-PM Boyko Borisov with supporters of his party, center-right Citizens for European Development (GERB) and the newly formed entity The Reformist Block.

The number of protesters increased substantially on the first day at work of the Bulgarian Parliament after the summer recess.

The demonstrators against the Cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski gathered once again on Independence square in front of the Council of Ministers building but route or the rally was different.

The protest did not follow the traditional route and went alongTsar Osvoboditrel Boulevard, Rakovska Street and headed for the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski."

The protesters held banners and national flags and shouted "mafia," "elections" and "resignation".

They also carried signs with the names of towns and cities from where they had arrived for the protest.

Traffic at „Independence" square, "Dondukov" Blvd, „Tsar Osvoboditel" Blvd and "Vasil Levski" Blvd was blocked.  The streets were guarded by riot police.

At one side of the Parliament building, demonstrators staged a counter-rally, calling for support for the Oresharski Cabinet.

The series of mass anti-government rallies in Sofia was triggered by the appointment of notorious media mogul and lawmaker Delyan Peevski as Head of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) back on June 14.

The protesters were not appeased by the subsequent cancellation of the decision and went on to demand the resignation of the Cabinet over ties with oligarchs and a number of controversial appointments.
