Bulgaria’s Socialist-backed government and the center-right opposition GERB party both resorted to bringing chartered buses full of supporters from all over the country to Sofia on Wednesday, as non-affiliated anti-government protesters once again gathered in the capital.

The separate groups of Bulgarian Socialist Party supporters, GERB supporters and Sofia-based anti-government protesters all gathered around the Parliament in downtown Sofia early on Wednesday, with no clashes reported so far.

GERB leader and former PM Boyko Borisov briefly appeared in front of his supporters and the non-affiliated anti-government protesters, prompting praise from the former and booing from the latter.

Wednesday marks the first day of Bulgaria’s new political season, with lawmakers returning to work amid escalating tensions.

The Socialist-led coalition government refuses to resign despite over 80 straight days of anti-corruption protests in the capital.
