A national operational headquarters is to coordinate the activities for handling the flow of refugees crossing the border into Bulgaria.

The measure was agreed upon on Friday by the Security Council at the Prime Minister's Office after it became clear that the accommodation capacity of centers for refugees in Bulgaria had been exhausted, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Television.

On a daily basis, some 40-50 illegal immigrants, most of them Syrians, seek asylum in Bulgaria.

To cope with the situation, the Security Council at the Prime Minister's Office decided to strengthen border surveillance, to allocate more facilities to the accommodation of refugees and to seek assistance from the EU in the case of an increase in refugee numbers.

The buildings of former military barracks are currently being inspected to see if they can be converted into temporary accommodation facilities.

If the situation in Syria worsens, Bulgaria expects to receive up to 10 000 refugees fleeing the civil war in the country.
