Lawmakers from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party have proposed banning the large retail chains in the country from working on weekend days.

The unusual move would seek to boost smaller stores.

"We are seeking mechanism for equality between Bulgarian producers and retailers, on the one hand, and large retailers, on the other," BSP Member of Parliament Spas Panchev has told local media.

Representatives of some of the large retail chains in the country have criticized the proposal, pointing out that customers should have the right to choose where to do their shopping.
