The Swedish Prime Minister, Goeran Persson, has reshuffled his cabinet, announcing two new appointments in his minority Social Democrat government. The appointments came after the Industry Minister, Bjoern Rosengren, announced his retirement and resigned last week. Two of the appointments are of ministers who oppose the single European currency and almost half the posts are now filled by women. The Trade Minister, Leif Pagrotsky, will retain his current post, but will also take over the industry ministry. Former Agriculture Minister Margareta Winberg becomes deputy prime minister, taking responsibility for equal rights and conditions for men and women, an important political issue in Sweden.
