Bulgarian Ultranationalists Yet to Decide on Overriding Budget Veto

Bulgarian ultranationalist party Ataka (Attack) is yet to decide on whether to override the veto issued by President Rosen Plevneliev on a controversial budget revision.

Ataka MP Magdalena Tasheva has told reporters that “the moment has not come” for the party to announce its decision.

The ultranationalist party has informally backed the ruling coalition of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).

BSP and DPS have a total of 120 seats in Bulgaria’s 240-seat Parliament, which means they would need the support of at least one Ataka lawmaker in order to override the presidential veto.

In a Wednesday statement, Bulgaria's head of state Rosen Plevneliev announced he had imposed a partialveto on the Law on Amending and Supplementing the State Budget Act for 2013, saying the Socialist-led coalition government had not shown enough transparency in its use of public money.

He explained that the package of social measures included in the budget update constituted a very small share of the earmarked expenses.
