Bulgarian Rulers: Low Deficit Is Not End in Itself

Bulgaria will retain a low budget deficit, but will not keep it exceedingly low at all costs, according to members of the ruling coalition.

"Deficits do not worry us. What worries us is the fact that and excessive stress on deficits is a pro-crisis policy, as we saw in last years," stated liberal MP Yordan Tsonev, chair of the Bulgarian Parliament's budget and finance committee.

On his part, Minister of Finance Petar Chobanov said that his office is implementing a number of social benefit increases, which he described as "something useful".

His aide, vice-FinMin Lyudmila Petkova assured that the ministry is applying all levers supplied by the law, in order to boost tax collectibility.

According to the office's data, uncollected VAT for 2012 through June ammounts to BGN 450 M.
