One train driver has died and at least 35 people have been injured, five of them seriously, in a collision between two trains in western Switzerland.

The crash happened in Granges-pres-Marnand in Vaud canton, about 50 km southwest of the capital Bern.

The regional trains collided head-on in the early evening Monday – at 6:45 pm. One train, bound for Lausanne, was getting ready to depart and the other, travelling from the same city, was arriving at the station.

The body of the driver of one of the trains was recovered from the wreckage early Tuesday morning after emergency workers succeeded in separating the two locomotives, Swiss police, cited by the BBC, have said.

An autopsy has been ordered to formally establish his identity.

The other driver is among the injured.

The most seriously injured passengers had earlier been taken to hospital by helicopter or ambulance. Others were treated at the scene.

The train line between the towns of Lucens and Payerne will be suspended Tuesday due to the probe to find the cause of the crash and the effort to clean the wreckage, again according to local police.

The BBC reminds that Switzerland's rail system is considered among the best and safest in the world.

Earlier this month, 79 people were killed in a high-speed derailment in northwestern Spain.
