German MEP Monika Hohlmeier has sent a letter to the European Commission concerning reforms in Bulgaria's security sector and the scandalous appointment of media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

In an official statement, she insists that Brussels take concrete measures to prevent future threats to the security of European citizens stemming from the appointment of incompetent or candidates with convictions to key positions.

According to a media statement of the European People's Party (EPP), as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), the German MEP reminds of an EC statement from June 17, 2013 informing that such appointments must be based on transparency and competence in order to guarantee European standards in the security sector.

Hohlmeier believes that Bulgaria's DANS is an institution with a significant role for the sphere of security in the EU.

She therefore asks how the EC intends to guarantee the cohesion of the security system of the EU, which depends on mutual trust between the institutions of the Member States.

Among the topics brought up by Hohlmeier, who is a member of the Special Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering, is the media environment in Bulgaria.

"How does the European Commission intend to restore the rule of law and fundamental rights like media pluralism in Bulgaria," she asks.

Hohlmeier, together with other MEPs, have prepared another question related to the actions of the police on July 23 during the clashes between anti-government protesters and riot police in around the Parliament building in Sofia.

The EC is to come up with an answer within three weeks.
