Thousands of Bulgarians have once again taken to the streets of the capital Sofia to stage an anti-corruption protest against the Socialist-led government.

Demonstrators gathered at the Nezavisimost (Independence) square in downtown Sofia earlier than usual, as they attempted to surround the former Communist Party House – now an administrative building of the National Assembly – where lawmakers held committee sittings on Thursday.

Protesters booed and shouted “Resign!” at key Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Maya Manolova as she left the building. All other MPs were reportedly escorted through one of the building’s side exits.

The peaceful rally later proceeded on its traditional route, heading towards the Parliament’s main building.

The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered more than a month ago by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet of PM Plamen Oresharski resign collectively over its ties with oligarchs.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday evening when protesters blocked the doors of Bulgaria's parliament, temporarily trapping inside more than 100 politicians, journalists and staff.
