Bulgaria's peaceful protests were marred by violent provokers, stated Bulgarian Minister of Interior Tsvetlin Yovchev at a special briefing Wednesday.
The statement comes after protesters clashed with police during an hours long blockade of the parliament in Sofia, which left MPs, staff and journalists trapped.
"This is not the peaceful face of the protests that we saw last night," said Yovchev, stressing he fully supports the rights of people to express their political views.
However, the vice-PM and Minister of Interior also stressed that he does not believe a cabinet resignation will contribute to solving the problems Bulgaria faces.
According to Yovchev, there were individual instigators among the crowd who confronted police and were throwing projectiles at the building of parliament, thus starting the skirmishes.
"It was not the police who attacked, it was they who were attacked," said Bulgaria's top cop.
One of the most heated movement was when police made a failed attempt to bring out MPs in a bus, which was pelted with rocks by protesters.
"I did not believe that peaceful Bulgarian citizens would throw pavement stones at a bus, impeding others to go back home," said Yovchev, adding that he personally approved the bus tactic.
The Minister of Interior underscored that the police is fully authorized to use force in such circumstances, and in general due to the fact that the law in Bulgaria doesn't permit rallies after 10 pm.
