Bulgaria: Bulgarian President Welcomes EU Decision to Blacklist Hezbollah's Armed Wing Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has welcomed EU’s decision to include the military wing of Hezbollah in its list of terrorist organizations.

“I welcome this decision, which is the result of the joint efforts of EU member states and the services of our partners to defend the security of citizens,” Plevneliev said in a statement.

The Bulgarian President reminded that the decision has been made after a thorough analysis.

“No one should underestimate EU’s readiness to defend the security of its citizens and of those living on its territory,” he said.

“Europe showed it is uncompromising against anyone who attempts to take the life or threaten the safety of innocent people on its territory.”

“Today’s decision is a strong signal that the European Union will continue working in cooperation with the Lebanese institutions and will back the democratic processes in the country,” he added.

EU Foreign Affairs Council decided on Monday to put the armed wing of Hezbollah on the EU's list of terrorist organizations.

The decision comes one year after the July 18 tragic incident at the Sarafovo airport, which killed seven, including five Israeli tourists, the Bulgarian bus driver, and the perpetrator of the attack.

In February 2013, Bulgaria's then-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, suggested that the evidence collected by the investigating authorities led to a "reasonable assumption" about the involvement of the Lebanese militant group in last year's terror attack at the Burgas airport.

Bulgaria's current Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev made clear recently that additional evidence had been uncovered confirming the initial hypothesis.
