Bulgaria’s embattled Socialist-led coalition government intends to stay in power at least until May 2014, according to Yordan Tsonev, a key lawmaker from the ruling predominantly ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms.

Tsonev told TV7 that the government’s resignation would not be on the agenda before that.

“The demands for unconditional resignation will not be satisfied,” he declared.

The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet of PM Plamen Oresharski resign collectively over its ties with oligarchs.

Earlier this week, the Ambassadors of Germany and France to Bulgaria supported the protesters by issuing a joint statement stressing that the voice of civil society must be heard and warning that the oligarchic model is incompatible with EU membership.
