US Airman Shouts 'Free Palestine' Before Self-Immolation at Israeli Embassy
A member of the United States Air Force made an attempt to set himself on fire and shouted "Free Palestine" outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington
Chavdar Yanev, who has been the focus of a nationwide search for a few days, has tried to set himself ablaze outside the headquarters of Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council, VSS, in Sofia.
On Thursday morning, Yanev poured inflammable liquid over his body but the police officers guarding the VSS building managed to interfere on time and prevent him from setting himself on fire, the Bgnes news agency informed.
The police officers were alerted to the self-immolation attempt by a photo reporter.
Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, who had entered the building shortly before the accident, went out to speak to Yanev, who had been protesting in front of the VSS building for months on end due to denial of justice.
Meanwhile, a crowd of 50-60 people had gathered in front of the VSS building on Thursday morning, chanting "mafia", "resign" and booing Tsatsarov, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.
Chavdar Yanev went missing on July 5, when he went out of his home, leaving behind a farewell note, offnews.bg informed.
Yanev wrote to his family that he loved them but he could not put up with losing his dignity.
Yanev reportedly returned home for a short while on July 8, he spoke to his wife, and then fled again.
On May 10, Yanev declared he was planning to set himself on fire outside the VSS building.
In early December 2012, he set up a tent outside VSS in protest against the breach of his consumer rights and declared he was going on a hunger strike.
Despite winning a case against heating utility Toplofikatsiya-Sofia after a ten-year court battle, the trial had a negligible effect
Yanev and his wife sentenced Toplofikatsiya-Sofia to pay them BGN 100 for being overcharged on heating bills.
The lengthy court proceedings cost BGN 11 000.
Despite the court ruling, it turned out that nobody could make the Sofia-based heating utility pay the sum of BGN 100 to the family and take their names off the customer list of the company, according to offnews.bg.
