Gun shots were produced overnight in Istiklal Avenue in Istanbul, heightening fears that ongoing protests are attracting violence.

A person attacked anti-government protesters with a sword, soon after which at least four shots were heard.

Police have reportedly arrested the man carrying the firearm.

The night was also marked by continued police brutality, with officers liberally using water cannons.

The secretary general of Turkey’s medical association Ali Cerkezoglu was among the 32 detainees for the night.

According to Cerkezoglu, who later spoke to media, police used force excessively and without due motivation.
