Syrian Opposition Elects New President

Syria's united opposition has chosen Saturday Ahmad Assi Jabra for its new president, report world agencies.

Former leader of the coalition Moaz Al-Khatib had resigned in protest against what he termed the inaction of the international community for the resolution of the Syrian crisis, recalls RIA Novosti.

Jabra was elected on a second round voting by the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.

He is the chair of the Syrian National Council, and served as interim chair of the Coalition after Al-Khatib's resignation in April.

The Syrian crisis, which has transformed into a full fledged civil war, has since March 2011 claimed more than 90,000 lives, according to UN data.
