The President of the Egyptian Constitutional Court Adly Mansour took the oath of office as the interim leader of Egypt.

"I swear to defend the Republic, to respect the Constitution and the law, and to protect the interests of the people," Mansour said during the ceremony at the Constitutional Court. "I accept the responsibility to be the interim leader of the state for the transitional period," Mansour also said.

Facing the deepening political crisis amid civil unrest in the country, the Egyptian army removed the Islamist President Mohammed Mursi from power on Wednesday.

The leaders of the Islamist group "Muslim Brotherhood" and the leader of its political wing, the Party of Freedom and Justice, Saad al-Katatni were arrested. The armed forces suspended the Constitution.

The commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Gen Abd-al-Fattah al-Sisi, announced that Mansour will take on presidential duties until elections are called.

Having served as deputy head of the constitutional court since 1992, Mansour was appointed as its president in May 2013 and took office on July 1.

Mansour is defined a "mysterious person" by Egypt's Masrawi website since he had not received much media attention over the years.

Born in Cairo in 1945, he received a license to practice law from the Cairo University in 1967 and joined the state council in 1970. He was appointed deputy president of the constitutional court in 1992, the BBC reports.

Mansour was probably first considered for a possible leader of Egypt on June 30, 2013.

Then, a group named "Al-Sha'ab Yureed" (The People Demand) distributed a petition among fellow protesters calling for the formation of a presidential council to run the country, where his name was listed as a possible member.

This is a time of a "rapid change" for Mansour, a man who has spent the last 10 years "playing the role of second-in-command" in the court, Masrawi reports.

Twitter users have seemingly embraced the possibility of Mansour's appointment, even congratulating him before his official induction.
