Indonesia Poised to Combat Terror

The Indonesian authorities are poised to assume sweeping new powers to combat terrorism under emergency legislation which is being brought in. The cabinet is meeting to approve a decree, already backed by parliament, which would enable the authorities to detain suspects on the basis of preliminary intelligence reports. The measures are also expected to allow the detention of terror suspects for up to a year without charges. A second decree is to deal specifically with investigations into the devastating Bali bombing on Saturday, extending powers in that investigation restrospectively so that they cover all suspects.
