The Director of Bulgaria's National Health Insurance Fund, NZOK, Dr. Plamen Tsekov has no intention of resigning.

Speaking for the Bulgarian National Television on Tuesday, he defined the pressure on him to resign as politically motivated.

Tsekov was appointed by the formerly-ruling center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB.

He rejected accusations of lack of transparency and said that all decisions of the Supervisory Board of NZOK were published on its website.

According to him, at the moment NZOK has the lowest staff and the most health insurance payments and its budget is stable.

GERB defended the Head of the National Health Insurance Fund on Monday. At a special press conference the former Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, and lawmakers Daniela Daritkova, Desislava Atanasova, Svetlana Angelova and Milena Damyanova, all from GERB, blamed new Health Minister Dr. Tanya Andreeva of staging a political purge with her request to replace Tsekov. According to them, Andreeva cannot ask for Tsekov's resignation as he has been elected by the Parliament.

Andreeva demanded Tsekov's resignation from the parliamentary tribune on June 28.

She explained that she joined the opinion of doctors and patients, united around the idea of Tsekov's ousting because of delayed payments to hospitals.

"NZOK is facing bankruptcy and there are problems with drugs supply for cancer patients," is how Maya Manolova, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, grounded the request for Tsekov's resignation.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Medical Association declared that while Tsekov is on this post, they will not negotiate the next framework agreement, as it happened with the current one.
