??Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Mihail Mikov has made a special address to the nation Wednesday evening, issuing strong criticism against verbal and physical assault against MPs at a rally earlier.
"Today's events showed that the situation in Sofia is escalating, from whence flows insecurity in the whole country," said Mikov in a statement aired by the Bulgarian National TV and Radio.
"Today's actions profanes not only the work of the National Assembly, but also that of MPs themselves, people who were elected a month and a half ago," added the Parliament Speaker.
Mikov strongly objected to what he termed "imperiling MPs' lives and health" on the part of protesters, who shouted derogatory and hate slogans, and threw projectiles such as eggs and tomatoes to MPs who had come out, some with the intention to hear the protesters' demands.
"A democratic exit from today's political crisis is impossible, even with early general elections, if there is no respect for the vote of citizens and the constitutional order," stated Mihov.
"We are placed in a situation that makes doing what we were elected for impossible. It is evident then that elections in themselves solve nothing," added he.
The Parliament Chair further said that he has asked Minister of Interior Tsvetlin Yovchev to implement all measures needed to secure the safety of MPs and the buildings of Parliament, so that the house can resume normal work.
He further called on Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev and all institutions and NGOs to act responsibly.
In his statement, Mikov clearly distinguished between the evening rallies that have been taking place in Sofia since June 14, which he described as peaceful, and what happened Wednesday morning in front of Parliament.
