The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has called an emergency meting over the increasingly complex political situation in the country amid ongoing anti-government protests.
On Wednesday morning, a sitting of Parliament was cancelled over the lack of quorum, with 112 MPs in attendance at the second count, below the threshold of 121, and absent MPs of center-right party GERB and nationalist party Ataka.
The failed parliament sitting was accompanied by a vocal protest of some 1000 people chanting "Resign!", Mafia!" and "Thrash!".
A second rally is to start at 6:30 pm in Sofia, following the tradition of the past 12 days.
Commenting on the lack of a quorum, BSP leader Sergei Stanishev declared that the absence of MPs of Ataka during Wednesday's sitting of Parliament was a clear indication that the nationalist party did not back the government.
Stanishev refused to offer further explanations, adding that he would come up with a statement after the meeting of BSP.
"Let us wait until tomorrow to find out whether Parliament will keep functioning," said socialist MP and Deputy Parliament Chair Maya Manolova, as cited by Sega daily.
Manolova suggested that the government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had not been given the chance to act and insisted that the program of the cabinet contained the steps for the solution of major problems such as youth unemployment, the need to improve the business climate and restrict racketeering.
She claimed that the steps had been planned and were to be implemented within a few months.
