Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has called upon party leaders to rely on common sense, realism and pragmatism in order to deal with the ongoing political crisis in the country.
“We do not need to compete with political and parliamentary maneuvers. I don’t want to be part of that,” he told the political leaders at the sitting of the Consultative Council for National Security on Thursday.
He urged the politicians to seek ways to restore the people’s sense of justice.
The President told reporters after the sitting that all parties have agreed to listen to the demands made by protesters and put efforts into ensuring stability in the country.
Plevneliev said the nationalist Ataka party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms are firmly supporting the government of PM Plamen Oresharski, while the center-right GERB of former PM Boyko Borisov would seek early elections.
Plevneliev called the Consultative Council sitting after the election of controversial businessman Delyan Peevski as head of Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security.
Peevski’s appointment was reversed by Parliament on Wednesday following a week of massive nationwide protests against his election.
The move failed to appease protesters, who have demanded the government’s resignation.
