Bulgarian Nationalist Slams Protesters, Warns of 'Civil War'
Notorious Bulgarian nationalist leader Volen Siderov made his latest controversial statement Monday, saying the opposition GERB party of former PM Boyko Borisov was seeking a “civil war.”
Siderov has claimed that the nationwide massive protests against the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski have been organized by GERB and “crime groups” aligned with the party.
The controversial nationalist has further stated that “hooligans” have taken part in the protest rallies.
“If the institutions fail to take control over the protests and the displays of hooliganism during them, a civil war will erupt in the country,” he said in a statement, as cited by Standart.
According to Siderov, Borisov and “gangsters working for him” are preparing “terror attacks” in order to destabilize the country.
Siderov’s nationalist party Ataka (Attack) is informally backing the coalition government of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms. The government, which took over at the end of May, is facing a fourth day of massive peaceful protests over the controversial appointment of a shady media mogul as head of the country’s State Agency for National Security (DANS).
Siderov staged his latest spectacle late Sunday evening, just minutes after the end of the national anti-government protest rally in the capital Sofia.
The nationalist leader arrived in downtown Sofia with a group of followers and demonstratively attacked and insulted journalists, protesters, and police officers.
The incident happened after the demonstrators decided to protest in front of the buildings of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, and of Ataka, where the tensions escalated as they were met by about 100 young men in black clothes, ready to defend their leader.
No other incidents were reported at Sunday’s rally.
