Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Bulgaria’s center-right opposition GERB party has announced that it considers initiating a no confidence vote against the embattled Socialist-led government that took over at the end of May.
The no confidence motion will be prompted by the appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski, GERB lawmaker Tsetska Tsacheva told reporters on Monday.
Tsacheva named the government’s “failure in the security sector” as the reason for the upcoming vote.
On Friday, Bulgaria's Parliament appointed Delyan Peevski, media mogul and MP of predominantly ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), as head of the national security agency, stirring a wave of protests across the country.
The step caused President Rosen Plevneliev to ask Parliament to reconsider the decision.
Plevneliev also scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security for June 20.
On Saturday, Peevski issued a statement saying that he was ready to step down "in the name of citizens, society and the state."
However, the move failed to curb the massive peaceful protests in the country, with tens of thousands gathering in Sofia and other major cities for a third day on Sunday.
Many protesters demanded the resignation of the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, which took over at the end of May.
New protest rallies are expected on Monday.
