Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Controversial businessman and MP Delyan Peevski has sent a letter to all media in Bulgaria to announce he was ready to withdraw from the post of Head of Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security (DANS).
"I accepted to carry out the duties of DANS Head on behalf of Bulgarian citizens. Again on their behalf, I am ready to accept a decision of the 42nd General Assembly to revoke my election. This act is a show of our shared responsibility – mine, of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, and the leaders of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, Sergey Stanishev and Lyutvi Mestan," Peevski writes in the letter.
The letter was sent in less than 12 hours after mass protests rallies were held in Sofia and across the country over outrage from the scandalous election.
The Parliament voted Friday to approve Oresharski's nomination, who proposed to have Peevski, MP from the liberal ethnic Turkish party DPS to lead DANS.
In a move, stunning both MPs from the opposition center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, of former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and parliamentary reporters, Oresharski proposed at the beginning of the sitting to have a new item on the agenda – election of new DANS Director.
The request caused outraged GERB MPs to leave plenary hall.
Oresharski then proceeded to nominate Peevski. The controversial MP was then quickly elected as the new head of the agency with the votes of his own party and of BSP, despite GERB returning to plenary hall and a repeat vote on their request.
The election stirred widespread outrage in Bulgaria.
In the letter Peevski explains he never wanted to be in power for the power's sake, stressing this was why he had not yet signed the appointment decree.
He proceeds to blast GERB for being a party of the underworld hungry for power.
"We undertook responsibility for the rule of the country on behalf of public interest. GERB feel unsecure when they are not in power. They also fear the inevitable revelations about their deeds. This is why they choose the path of destruction, and targeted me because they know that I can oppose them effectively," Peevski writes.
The MP stresses the Cabinet "Oresharski" deserved to be trusted to implement reforms in justice and home affairs, and to lead the country out of the swamp of criminal control.
"If having an intelligence expert and professional as Head of DANS would be best in the name of the highest national interest, I am brave and dignified enough to accept this with inner conviction. Despite the endless tarnishing of my public image with unfounded suspicions and slander, I have my manly consciousness to state that there is nothing higher than my homeland's national security," the letter concludes.
It was reported earlier by a number of Bulgarian media that Peevski was withdrawing from the post of Head of DANS. In the letter, however, he states he was "ready to withdraw.
