Bulgaria’s largest tourism associations have proposed Elena Ivanova for chair of the National Tourism Agency.
Currently, Ivanova chairs the Association of Owners in Sunny Beach and is a deputy- chair of the Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association.
The tourism associations have sent a letter to Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, promoting Ivanova’s appointment, news.bg reported.
“The appointment of Elena Ivanova will be that of an established expert, uniting around herself her colleagues from the tourist sector, concerned about the development of the tourist business,” the letter says.
The union firmly declared that it is against the appointment of politicians or athletes in the sector, without the support of the big tourism associations. It insisted that PM Oresharski would take into consideration its opinion on the matter.
The Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agents, the Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators and Travel Agencies, the Union of Investors in Tourism, the National Tourist Chamber and many regional tourist associations have backed up Elena Ivanova’s nomination as chair of the National Tourism Agency.
The tourism associations that unite owners, managers, employees and workers, are worried about the consequences of the global financial crisis for the Bulgarian tourism industry, according to a press release.
The tourism industry, which is a priority sector in the country’s economy, offers 700 000 jobs, contributes around EUR 3 B to the state budget, accounts for 16 % of the Bulgaria’s GDP, and attracts more than 1.5 M tourists to Bulgaria annually.
