The furthering of the European project is intrinsically linked to the equal development of EU's different regions, stated Bulgarian President Rosen Pleveliev in Bratislava Wednesday.

Plevneliev took part in the 18th annual summit of leaders from Central and Eastern Europe, which took place in Slovakia's capital.

Among the key topics discussed by the Bulgarian President with other leaders from the region was the full implementention of the potential of EU's cohesion policy as a way to overcome the ongoing economic crisis and to overcome differences in development amongst member states.

Within the summit, Plevneliev held bilateral meetings with counterparts from the Czech Republic, Latvia and Slovakia - Milos Zeman, Andirs Berzins and Ivan Gasparovic.

The Bulgarian President singled out in particular the need to interconnect the power and natural gas networks of countries in Central to those of countries in Eastern Europe.

"At present Slovakia is experiencing a shortace of electric power, while Bulgaria has a surplus that it cannot take advantage of, because of the lack of such links," said Plevneliev.

He stressed that a better interconnection can positively contribute not only to the countries' economy, but also to their national security and the security of the whole EU.

During Plevneliev meeting with Slovakian President Gasparovic, the two heads of state also arranged a later visit of Plevneliev to Slovakia for the celebration of the 1,150 anniversary of the 863 Great Moravia mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who were instrumental in translating the Bible into Slavic and in creating the Cyrillic script.
