Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has announced he will sign into law a legislative act making significant reshuffles in the structure of Bulgaria's law enforcement agencies.
The bill, passed at second reading by Parliament Friday, envisions the transfer of the Bulgarian police's special unit against organized crime (GDBOP) from the Ministry of Interior to the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
The amendents generated controversy, with MPs from former ruling GERB party arguing that they will create disbalance in Bulgaria's law enforcement agencies and will render ineffective the fight against organized crime.
In his statement Wednesday, President Plevneliev recalled he has conducted consultations with all parties and stakeholders, and has taken their views into account.
"The President's decision is motivated by the established democratic tradition to give the new Parliament the needed credit of trust in the house's initial act," reads a statement by the President's Office.
Plevneliev also calls on MPs to further review the act and make additional amendments if needed, so that it cannot be challenged in the Constitutional Court.
