Bulgaria's Ministry of Defense is currently operating under a BGN 140 М deficit in the funds it needs, according to new Defense Minister Angel Naydenov.

Monda Naydenov gave a press conference to inform the public about the status of his ministry.

"One good thing is that we have 100% of funds needed to reimburse officers. But the distribution within the budget is far from optimal," said Naydenov.

According to him, only 5% of the ministry's funds are alloted for capital expenses, with an excessively high percentage devoted to the staff.

"Insufficient funds for the ministry's activities amount to BGN 140," said Naydenov, adding that the ministry will have to find additional funds or else cancel already made commitments.

According to the new Defense Minister, the situation says that the ministry cannot start up any new projects this year.

At the same time, Angelov stepped up for an eventual end to the ongoing campaign of reducing the size of the Bulgarian Army.
