Bulgaria's Parliament will vote Wednesday morning on the proposal to lift the MP immunity of former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

The proposal of Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov to launch a criminal investigation into Tsvetanov's work during his term in office as Interior Minister is the first item on the agenda of Wednesday's plenary sitting of Parliament, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Television (BNT).

Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor announced last week that the prosecuting authority had issued a request for the lifting of the MP immunity of Tsvetanov, MP and Deputy Chair of the center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB).

The probe is to establish whether Tsvetanov failed to exercise proper control over Interior Ministry officials, thereby allowing unauthorized wiretapping of high-profile businessmen, politicians and magistrates.

Tsvetanov vowed to give up his immunity from prosecution after his return from Brussels.

The prosecuting authority is expected to seek arrest or a bail of nearly BGN 100 000.

The Bulgarian Watergate scandal unfurled at the end of March when Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), submitted a tip-off to Tsatsarov about alleged illegal wiretapping of politicians, businesspeople and magistrates which had taken place during the term in office of the GERB government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
