Two protest rallies in favor of the existing full smoking ban in enclosed public spaces are to take place in Bulgaria as the country marks this year's World No-Tobacco Day on Friday.
Both rallies are to be stages in front of the Parliament in downtown Sofia. The first demonstration has been scheduled to coincide with the start of the working day for Bulgarian lawmakers – 9 am EET, while the second is to take place at 5 pm.
The rallies have been triggered by fears that the new majority in Parliament would ease the existing full smoking ban imposed exactly one year ago by the center-right GERB government of former PM Boyko Borisov.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, who took oath of office Wednesday, has already hinted that the ban may be reexamined due to its allegedly harmful economic effects.
Over 50 000 Bulgarians have already signed an online petition in favor of keeping the ban.
