Bulgaria's newly sworn-in government will discuss EU funds absorption at a meeting this week, according to Justice Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Zlatanova.

The ministers will propose and discuss options for accelerating EU funds absorption in order to minimize the risk of losing large amounts of resources, Zlatanova explained in an interview for the morning broadcast of private TV channel bTV.

Citing data provided by the former caretaker government, she explained that Bulgraia risked losing EUR 272 M in EU funds in 2013, adding that the country was not only likely to fail to get the money, but to also be forced to cover the costs from the state budget.

Zlatanova noted that Bulgaria had some catching up to do, adding that the most important task was to restrict losses as much as possible, after which the efforts would be directed towards boosting absorption by end-2013, at  the same time planning for the next programming period.

She vowed to consult magistrates and NGOs on all judicial reforms and to take recommendations into consideration, adding that she would not take any steps which had not been agreed and discussed in advance.

Bulgaria's new Justice Minister suggested that the rule of law would not be achieved by drafting strategies and amending existing legislation, but by diligent execution of duties, citing the accomplishments of Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov as an example.

Zlatanova concluded by saying that public institutions had to "know their place" and to not overstep their spheres of competence specified in the laws and the Constitution.
