The name of Bulgarian legendary gymnast, Yordan Yovchev, has popped up Wednesday as the first known Deputy Minister in the new Cabinet.
Yovchev will be serving as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports.
His name was mentioned in plenary hall by Lyutvi Mestan, leader of the liberal ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, in a reply to criticism coming from Tsvetan Tsvetanov, former Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister in the Cabinet of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB.
Tsvetanov voiced serious doubts Bulgarian sports will advance under the leadership of Mariana Georgieva, a grammar professor, who has been nominated to become Minister of Youth and Sports.
"The Ministry of Sports has a new function related to the young people of Bulgaria, but sports would not suffer either as the genius Bulgarian athlete and competitor Yordan Yovchev will be in charge of it," said Mestan.
The Bulgarian Parliament is voting Tuesday on the country's new Cabinet tabled by Former Finance Minister, Plamen Oresharski, who was nominated for PM by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP.
In the previous government term, Youth was under the authority of the Education Ministry.
The choice of Georgieva, who is indeed a Professor of syntax at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences' Bulgarian Language Institute, for Minister of Sports has raised a few eyebrows in the country.
Yovchev is a four-times world champion and the first ever male gymnast to compete in six Olympic Games. He is President of the Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation.
He was Deputy Caretaker Minister of Sports in the caretaker Cabinet as well.
