Bulgaria’s embattled former Interior Minister tabled a request to be stripped of immunity as lawmaker just hours after the country’s new Parliament convened, on May 21, Tuesday.

"On Tuesday, I will publicly ask to be stripped of immunity from prosecution. I have a moral obligation to all who believe in me and supported me," Tsvetan Tsvetanov said in an interview for Nova TV channel over the weekend.

Tsvetanov, who is former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s closest aide and a key official of the center-right GERB party, faces charges of failing to exercise proper control over the use of special surveillance devices during his term in office.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has already declared that it will request stripping the immunity of Tsvetanov after the latter takes the oath of office as Member of the Parliament.

Last week former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov surprisingly announced that his center-right GERB party will request a cancellation of May 12 election results due to a "violation" on the day before the vote.
