French President Francois Hollande has signed into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the country.

France has now become the ninth country in Europe, and 14th globally, to legalise gay marriage.

"I have taken [the decision]; now it is time to respect the law of the Republic,” Hollande said, as cited by the BBC.

On Friday, the Constitutional Council rejected a challenge by the right-wing opposition, clearing the way for Francois Hollande to sign the bill.

The first gay wedding in France could be held 10 days after the bill's signing.

The bill prompted months of widespread and sometimes violent protests, largely by conservative and religious groups.
