Bulgaria has the lowest electricity prices in the EU, yet gas prices are among the highest in the EU27, according to recent data of the European Commission.
According to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) citing EC data, experts say that Bulgaria is in a particularly unfavorable situation in the EU as regards gas prices due to its dependence on a single source.
The experts recommend a number of solutions for Bulgaria's problem, including building reversible gas interconnections with neighboring countries and exploring shale and natural gas deposits in the country.
Bulgaria has the lowest electricity tariffs for households and the industry in statistical terms, but this does not hold true if the prices are considered against the backdrop of Bulgarians' incomes, the experts say.
The experts say that Bulgaria can decrease power rates by improving the electricity transmission system and building new facilities.
The EC presented data on the separate EU Member States before the upcoming sitting of the European Council on May 22, which is expected to feature energy as a major topic.
Meanwhile it also became clear Friday that the two EC expert missions sent to Bulgaria at the request of the caretaker government were summarizing their conclusions and recommendations which would be shortly presented to the Bulgarian authorities.
