A vast majority of Bulgarians – 80.4% - believe that the country’s prosecuting authority to demand that former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov be stripped of his immunity as lawmaker, according to a poll conducted by Sova Harris.

Tsvetanov, a key official of the center-right GERB party, faces charges of failing to exercise proper control over the use of special surveillance devices during his term in office.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has already declared that it will request stripping the immunity of Tsvetanov after the latter takes the oath of office as Member of the Parliament. The embattled former Interior Minister has declared that he would voluntarily give up his immunity.

The Sova Harris poll has also shown that 62.1% of Bulgarians approve the decision made by the Chief Prosecutor’s office to seize a total of 350 000 questionable ballots on the eve of last week’s general election.

Some 56% believe that the illegal ballots were to be used for voting fraud.

88.1% of responders say the illegal ballots scandal did not affect their vote.
