The District Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria's southern city of Plovdiv has announced that the indictment of Roma clan leader Kiril Rashkov, also known as Tsar Kiro, and his wife, for large-scale tax evasion, has been submitted to the Plovdiv District Court.

Rashkov and his wife face charges of evading taxes to the tune of BGN 133 660.34 in the period 15, 2003 – April 30, 2011 as natural persons, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

The two face a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of up to BGN 1000 for the offence.

The two defendants transferred a sum of BGN 480 781,34, of which BGN 267 320,68 in principals and BGN 213 460,66 in interests to the state budget.

On September 23, 2011, a van driven by alleged associates of Rashkov ran down and killed 19-year-old ethnic Bulgarian Angel Petrov.

On the following day, protesting locals and groups of football fans from the nearby Plovdiv set fire to a number of properties of the Rashkovi clan.

The accident heightened ethnic tensions and triggered massive protests in major cities in the country.

The driver of the mini-van, Yosif Yosifov, was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment, while Rashkov was sentenced to three years of imprisonment for issuing a death threat to residents of Katunitsa on September 23, 2011.

Kiril Rashkov has an alleged long record in bootleg alcohol production, illegal acquisition of land, organization of pickpocketing networks, and human trafficking.
